Sometimes life gets in the way of maintenance. A rental property handed over with months of buildup, a home after an illness or a busy period, a bathroom that 'needed cleaning' for so long it became invisible. Restoring it is more involved than a weekly clean, but it's entirely possible with the right approach.
Assessment: What You're Dealing With
Before starting, assess the scale of the problem on each surface. Light scale on glass: hazy but still mostly transparent. Moderate scale: opaque white patches, rough to the touch. Heavy scale: thick white-grey crust, glass feels rough everywhere. Heavy scale requires multiple acid treatment sessions, not just one long application.
Identify any surfaces that have been damaged — chrome that has permanent pitting, glass with micro-scratches from previous abrasive cleaning. These can be cleaned but not fully restored; set realistic expectations.
Step 1: Pre-Wet All Surfaces
Before applying any cleaner, wet all surfaces thoroughly with plain water. On porous surfaces like grout, pre-wetting reduces absorption of the cleaning solution and allows it to stay active on the surface longer. On glass and chrome, pre-wetting helps the cleaning product adhere.
Step 2: Apply Acid Descaler to All Hard Surfaces
Apply acid-based cleaner generously to glass, tiles, chrome, and the toilet bowl exterior. For glass and tiles, use a foaming or gel formulation that clings to vertical surfaces — thin liquids run off before the acid can work. Ensure complete coverage, including edges, corners, and the base of fittings where scale accumulates densely.
For dense scale on flat surfaces, soak a cloth in the acid solution and lay it on the surface — this provides sustained acid contact more effectively than a spray. Leave for 5--10 minutes. You may hear or see slight fizzing as CO₂ is released from the acid-calcium reaction.
Step 3: Mechanical Assist for Heavy Buildup
After acid dwell time, use a soft non-scratch sponge or cloth to work loosened scale off surfaces. Do not use abrasive pads or metal scourers — the scale has been chemically loosened and needs only light mechanical assistance, not force. For very heavy scale, you may find that one acid treatment loosens the outer layers, rinse, and then a second application is needed for the remaining deposit. This is normal for severely neglected surfaces.
Step 4: Alkaline Clean
After rinsing the acid cleaner, apply your standard bathroom cleaner to address soap scum, mildew, and organic residue. This step is now substantially more effective because the mineral base layer has been removed — organic deposits no longer have the rough mineral surface to grip.
Step 5: Rinse, Dry, Inspect
Rinse all surfaces thoroughly with clean water. Dry glass and chrome with microfiber cloths — this reveals the true cleaned state of the surfaces and prevents immediate re-staining from drying water. Inspect: if scale remains, repeat the acid step. If all surfaces are clean, apply a hydrophobic glass coating and a chrome wax before the first use. Then start the weekly maintenance routine to prevent returning to this point.
