Ahmedabad and the broader Gujarat region have a complicated water quality story. Surface water from the Narmada Main Canal, where it reaches, is relatively moderate in hardness. But much of Ahmedabad's residential demand — particularly in peripheral areas — is met from groundwater that reflects Gujarat's geology: mineral-rich, often saline in coastal districts, and hard throughout most of the interior.
Gujarat's Groundwater Chemistry
The Central Ground Water Board's 2024 report identifies Gujarat as one of the states with significant electrical conductivity concerns — an indicator of high dissolved mineral content including hardness. The state has a mix of alluvial aquifers (Indo-Gangetic type in north Gujarat) and hard rock aquifers in south and central Gujarat. North Gujarat groundwater frequently tests at 600--1200 mg/L TDS. The 2024 CGWB report highlights rising salinity in parts of the state, particularly near the coast.
Ahmedabad city borewell water typically ranges from 500 to 900 mg/L TDS depending on locality. Established areas with well-developed AMC piped supply get moderated water; newer suburban areas and industrial corridors around the city increasingly rely on borewell supply.
What Ahmedabad Residents Experience
At 600--900 mg/L TDS, the bathroom scale problem in Ahmedabad is severe. Glass enclosures cloud over quickly. Taps develop mineral rings at their bases within days of installation. The city's dry climate — hot and low humidity for much of the year — accelerates evaporation on bathroom surfaces, meaning mineral deposits form faster than in more humid cities.
The dry air means squeegee use is particularly important in Ahmedabad — water evaporates very quickly on surfaces in the Gujarati summer, leaving dense mineral deposits if not removed.
