Ranipet water, like most of Tamil Nadu, is sourced from borewells and groundwater aquifers. As water travels through rock and soil, it dissolves calcium and magnesium carbonates — the minerals responsible for hard water. The result: 500 ppm TDS, classified as Extreme hardness.
At Extreme TDS, untreated glass develops permanent etching within months. The mineral layer bonds so strongly that physical scrubbing spreads it rather than removing it.
BIS standard IS:10500 considers water above 300 ppm as hard and recommends treatment above 500 ppm. At 500 ppm, Ranipet water is within the acceptable range, but mineral deposits on shower glass and faucets are still a common household issue.
