Why showerheads lose pressure in hard-water homes
If your shower pressure has dropped or water sprays unevenly from different holes, limescale may be blocking the showerhead. Hard water leaves mineral deposits behind as droplets dry. Over time, those deposits clog tiny outlets.
This is especially common in bathrooms because showerheads are constantly exposed to water evaporation.
Signs your showerhead needs descaling
- Water sprays sideways
- Some holes are blocked
- Pressure feels weak even when tap pressure is fine
- White crust appears around nozzles
- Showerhead looks dull or chalky
- Cleaning with soap does not fix the issue
Soap can clean surface grime, but mineral scale needs descaling.
Which product to use
OrangeDemon DescaleX can be used for showerheads. DescaleX Bio can also be used for showerheads when a food-grade formula is preferred, but DescaleX is the main appliance-grade option.
For chrome fittings, shower glass, tiles, or bathroom surface scale, use the correct surface product such as TapStrike or Fighter when available. DescaleX powder is not meant for natural stone, shower glass, chrome fittings, or tiles.
How to descale a removable showerhead
- Remove the showerhead.
- Dissolve one sachet of DescaleX in a bowl of warm water.
- Submerge the showerhead for 30-60 minutes.
- For heavy scale, extend soak time up to two hours.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Reattach and flush water for one minute.
How to descale a fixed showerhead
- Dissolve one sachet in warm water.
- Fill a plastic bag with the solution.
- Secure the bag around the showerhead so the nozzles are submerged.
- Leave for around one hour.
- Remove the bag.
- Flush the shower for one minute.
- Wipe the outside gently.
What not to do
Do not use abrasive metal brushes that scratch the finish. Do not use DescaleX on natural stone, marble, granite, powder-coated metal, or unrinseable surfaces. Do not mix with bleach or alkaline cleaners.
How often should you clean showerheads?
- Soft water: every 4-6 months
- Moderate water: every 2-3 months
- Hard water: every 6-8 weeks
- Very hard water: every 4-6 weeks
Bathrooms in high-TDS areas may need more frequent maintenance because water dries on exposed surfaces every day.
Final word
Low shower pressure is not always a plumbing problem. If the pressure drop is mainly at the showerhead, limescale could be blocking the holes. A proper descaling soak can restore flow without harsh scrubbing.
If the showerhead is choking with scale, soak it with DescaleX.
